Implement Crime Gun Intelligence Partnership

Description

Advance the Akron Police Department's (APD) gun violence reduction strategy and implement the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Why is This Important

Real-time analysis of crime gun evidence helps law enforcement identify patterns, link cases, and get illegal guns off the street faster. By pairing local officers with federal partners, the CGIC strengthens Akron's ability to respond to gun violence and make our community safer.

Initiative Wins

  • Established and outfitted the physical CGIC facility.

  • Built a multi-agency partnership with personnel from APD, ATF, and surrounding law enforcement agencies.

  • Reduced shell casing testing turnaround from roughly 10 days (June 2024) to roughly 2 days (February 2026).

  • Supported 41 federal prosecutions and recovery of 844 illegal firearms in 2025, including 37 federal and 12 state arrests through Operation Double Eagle.
