Implement Project Acorn Tree Canopy Work
Description
Develop and implement the grant-funded Project Acorn, which combines paid urban forestry workforce training with tree planting in five Akron neighborhoods with low tree canopy coverage: Sherbondy Hill, Summit Lake, South Akron, East Akron, and Middlebury.
Why is This Important
Trees provide cooling shade, cleaner air, and greener streets, benefits that are not shared equally across all Akron neighborhoods. Project Acorn increases tree canopy in underserved areas while creating paid workforce training opportunities in urban forestry for Akron residents.
Initiative Wins
Completed the first cohort of a paid urban forestry workforce training program with 5 trainees.
Planted 250+ trees across five low-canopy neighborhoods as part of first cohort in Fall 2025.
