Complete the removal and replacement of all lead service lines throughout the Akron Water System.

Why is This Important

No family should have to worry about lead in their drinking water. Akron’s decades‑long commitment to replacing lead service lines protects residents’ health, especially children’s, and makes Akron one of the safest water systems in the country.

Initiative Wins

  • Completed removal of all City-owned lead service lines in the Akron Water System on November 19, 2025, marking the end of a 61-year program that replaced an estimated 50,000 lead lines.

  • Became the largest city in Ohio and one of the few cities in America to achieve a fully lead-free water system.

What We’ve Done This Quarter
  • Completed the historic removal of all City-owned lead service lines.

What We’re Working on Next Quarter
  • Replacing qualifying galvanized steel lines formerly downstream of lead service lines, targeting removal of 5,000 lines by 2027 at a rate of approximately 15-19 per day.

  • Executing the 2026 program to remove 1,042 inactive lead lines, 250 galvanized house lines, and assess lines of unknown material.
