Launch Right to Counsel Pilot

Description

Launch the Right to Counsel (RTC) pilot, which provides free legal representation to Akron residents facing eviction, as part of a broader effort to strengthen tenants' rights and reduce evictions.

Why is This Important

When tenants have legal representation during eviction proceedings, they are much more likely to stay in their homes. This pilot provides free legal help to low‑income families with children and older adults with disabilities, supporting housing stability and stronger neighborhoods. It also improves access to resources that help stabilize housing.

Initiative Wins

  • Launched the RTC pilot on September 15, 2025, in partnership with Community Legal Aid (CLA) and United Way of Summit & Medina (UWSM).

  • Received 80+ applications for legal assistance in the first months of operation.

  • Established a community stakeholder group to guide implementation.

  • Secured consulting support from national firm Stout to build outcomes tracking and evaluation.

  • 80% of cases have had a favorable outcome from the clients perspective, whether defeating the eviction, to agreed moveout date, to access to rental assistance. Both landlords and tenants can be made whole, while reducing court time.
